Determined to wrest the throne from his brother, Severyn intended nothing less than the resurrection of the ancient naragi. Tanyrin teetered on the edge of chaos.Ī loyal and devoted friend to Tanyrin's crown prince, Michael could refuse Severyn Lothlain nothing, not even when Severyn asked the unspeakable of him. Fear of the h'nara, fanned by the Church, spread tentacles everywhere. The latest of the Lothlain kings was a weakling, unable to curb the ambitions of an increasingly powerful, corrupt clergy. In ordinary times, the paths of Michael and Stefn would never have crossed. Of all the h'nara, his family alone was immune from the persecution of the powerful Church of Loth, protected by an ancient covenant. Michael Arranz was the son of a duke and one of the despised h'naran, half-bloods cursed with the blood of the nara running through their veins. He was also a sin-catcher, living proof of God's displeasure, the shame of his existence atonement for the sins of his ancestors. Stefn Eldering was the youngest son of the Earl of Shia, the last in a long, proud line of demon hunters. For four hundred years afterwards, the land was at peace. Not until the coming of Arami Lothlain, King of Tanyrin and Blessed of Loth, did the rein of the nara come to a bloody end. The most feared among them were their naragi, sorcerers whose power was all but invincible. Human-like, but not human, the nara ruled Tanyrin for centuries.

I was so enthralled that my father gave me a book, a compilation of the best stories. Of course, during my childhood I also became intrigued with Greece through the many stories of this land I was told – legends full of wit and wisdom, with a god or goddess for everything, from love to war to wine-making. They were wonderfully warm and loyal people. I grew up in Alexandria, Egypt, at a time when it was a very cosmopolitan place, and many of my parents’ friends and my school friends were Greek. I first fell in love with Greece through meeting Greek people. Greece has been on my ‘must write’ list for many years, because it is one of my favourite corners of the globe. So it is with my new novel, Aphrodite’s Tears, set in the Greek islands. In each of these novels, the setting is essential to the mood and the themes it’s not just a backdrop that could be substituted for some other place, but an integral part of the story. So far, my fiction has taken readers to Kenya ( Burning Embers), to Venice and Tuscany, Italy ( The Echoes of Love), and to Andalucía, Spain ( Indiscretion, Masquerade and Legacy). I am delighted to welcome guest blogger Hannah Fielding!Ĭhoosing Greece as the setting for my new novel Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Kindle. The gifted Wilson had learned to read at age four, and ultimately received an honorary high school diploma from the library for the precocious extent to which he educated himself with its books. Dropping out of high school in the tenth grade after being falsely accused of plagiarizing a twenty-page paper on Napoleon I, Wilson worked odd jobs and made great use of Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Library. Facing racist rage-their Hazelwood home had bricks thrown through its windows-they soon moved to a new home. Upon the divorce of his mother and father in the 1950s, Wilson and his family would move to Hazelwood-a mainly white, working-class section of Pittsburgh where their appearance, as a black family, wasn’t met with open arms. The fourth of six children, Wilson was raised in a poor neighborhood of Pittsburgh predominately populated by black Americans, as well as Italian and Jewish immigrants. The Odes contain versions of some of the best known Greek myths, such as Jason and the Argonauts, and Perseus and Medusa, and are a valuable source for Greek religion and ethics. Explanatory notes help the reader to navigate Pindar's sometimes compressed and allusive expressive technique. Pindar praises the victor by comparing him to mythical heroes and the gods, but also reminds the athlete of his human limitations. The succinct introduction by Stephen Instone outlines the essential nature of Pindar's odes as well as explaining the nature of the Games, the events, and the participants.

Wilde was jailed for indecency and sentenced to two years of hard labor, which he served. In that same year, Wilde’s secret life as a homosexual was exposed by his lover’s father, which in late Victorian England was a criminal act. After its success, Wilde turned to writing plays, producing a number of comedies that made light of different aspects of society, as well as his most famous play, the wildly successful The Importance of Being Earnest in 1895. In the 1890s, Wilde reached the height of his writing career, beginning with the publication of his sole novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. During this time, he also married Constance Lloyd, the daughter of a wealthy lawyer with whom he had two children. He became a renowned public figure in London and abroad because of his sharp wit, eccentricity, and praise of the hedonistic pursuit of pleasure. During and after university, Wilde was a prominent advocate of aestheticism and dabbled in a number of literary pursuits as an essayist, lecturer, journalist, and author.
