Because I enjoy traveling so much more without the burden of a huge, heavy suitcase or backpack to lug around the globe - and because a friend recently mentioned that she needed to learn how to pack lightly - I thought that I’d impart a few packing tips. This week I’m switching gears to discuss another passion of mine, travel. Earlier this month I returned to Canterbury, England high school students and English majors might recognize as the pilgrims’ destination in …įood fans, hold onto your forks and knives. A travel-inspired dessert Similar to most of my recipes, this cake originated from a trip. Although the ingredients had changed, the name remained the same. This new version consisted of eggs, lemon juice, sugar and butter and had a velvety texture. By the late 1800s modern lemon curd had entered the kitchen. What remained was lemon-flavored curds or lemon curds. The watery part of this mixture, the whey, was drained off. So, how did this British creation end up with such a misleading name? The curd in “lemon curd” In its earliest form lemon curd was the result of mixing lemon juice with cream. Lemon curd has a smooth, thick and creamy feel and sweetly tart taste. True curds possess a rubbery and sometimes grainy texture. By definition, curd is the semi-solid created when acid is added to milk. For such a delicious topping, lemon curd has been cursed with a rather unappetizing name. When I go to Europe or the US people are surprised that I’m Australian because I obviously look European. The rest of the world is so unaware of Australian’s cultural mix because it’s not the way Australia promotes itself. Australian film and TV and books are saturated with Anglo or Celtic family life and it’s important for me to explore the cultural upbringing of many Australians. With SAVING FRANCESCA, I decided not to explore the Italian culture as such, but to use it as a backdrop to family life in Australia. We also made tomato sauce every year, a scene that made both the film and the novel. So LOOKING FOR ALIBRANDI was about that balance and many of the stories about Josie’s grandmother first coming to Australian were similar to those of my grandparents. I certainly felt as if I was balancing two cultures and I didn’t feel as if I belonged to one or the other. I grew up with an Italian born father and a mother of Italian born parents so European culture had much to do with our lives. When it comes to LOOKING FOR ALIBRANDI, I always say that it’s not about me, but it was about my world back when I was a teenager. What part of your own Italian origin has been reflected in these characters? Both main characters in your first two novels have Italian roots that influenced them to a greater or lesser extent. “I thought that maybe they would think it was too Catholic. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, said he was surprised PBS agreed to air “Catholicism.” No money was exchanged under the agreement, Father Barron said, and Word on Fire will promote the full DVD set and program at the end of each episode.įather Barron, a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and a professor of faith and culture at the University of St. The global media ministry Word on Fire - which aims to “educate and engage the culture” - pitched all 10 episodes of “Catholicism” to PBS, but the network opted to run four shows: the revelation, God becomes man the mystery of God Mary, the mother of God and Peter and Paul as missionaries. The series was filmed in high-definition and spans more than 50 locations in 15 countries. The priest’s goal was to show the history and treasures of the Catholic Church. Episodes also will be broadcast on the Eternal Word Television Network. It includes 10, hourlong DVDs, leader and group study guides and a 300-page stand-alone book of the same title. The series is hosted by Father Robert Barron, who runs the Chicago-based Word on Fire ministry. CHICAGO (CNS) - Television viewers across the country will get a glimpse into the rich history, culture and tenets of the Catholic faith this fall when 90 public television stations across the country air episodes of a series called “Catholicism” that was developed by a Chicago priest. We have got to learn to differentiate between the religious beliefs that are right and proper that a liberal society should tolerate and accept and welcome, and the religious, in quote, "beliefs" that are actually militaristic and threatening and subversive, we should not be tolerating. But at the same time, we mustn't be stupid about it as we are being, and say, because we don't -want to demonize all Muslims, we are not going to ask anybody about their radical beliefs. It's very important that we don't forget that. PHILLIPS: They wish to live just like you and me, raise their children, have a good job, benefit from the human rights of the West. It is very important to bear in mind that a very large number of Muslims in Britain and everywhere else are not radical. I think that with so much of the Islamic world, having fallen prey to this very militarized, radicalized, threatening set of beliefs, I think one should do that. |
